Love Is by Diane Adams, illustrated by Claire Keane | Book Review

Today’s book is a tender ode to motherhood from a unique perspective–that of a young girl caring for a duckling. The book gently explains love in a way that SO captures the sacrifice (and beauty) of motherhood. From “noisy midnight feedings” (finally solved by cuddles of course), to the day-to-day chores that define motherhood, this book gets it. And all too soon, the young girl feels the pangs of knowing it is time to let her little one go, “Love is missing, reminiscing, wishing things could stay the same.”

What I Love About Love Is

Love Is is the perfect picture book to start conversations about what love means with your kids. Love truly is a sacrifice. Especially perhaps in motherhood. From the days, months, and years of giving EVERYTHING you have, to the realization it’s time to give up the very one(s) you poured everything into so selflessly…it hits home!

I love how the illustrations tell the story of the sweet young girl and her pet, but paired with the rhyming poetry, the meaning deepens even more. You won’t walk away unmoved from this one. I imagine my own perspective on this story will grow and change too as I continue in my motherhood journey.

Oh! And I can’t finish this post without noting the lovely illustrations from Claire Keane (who did development art for Tangled and Frozen). The colors, mood, and expressions are spot on. Just lovely!
