Where to Buy Chalk Paint?

Years ago it was a bit of a challenge to track down chalk paint. Now, in addition to the specialty boutique stores, it’s easy to find a brand or two at local home centers, hardware stores, craft stores and (conveniently) even online.

Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite places to pick up chalk style paint as well as tips for saving money on your chalk painting projects.

Let’s dive in!

Specialty Craft Stores: Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and More

Annie Sloan is of course the creator of the original Chalk Paint. Her popular paint has changed many a piece of worn-out furniture over the years and remains very popular.

If you are wondering where to find Annie Sloan paint, the best way to find a local store is to use the store finder on the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint website. You can also purchase Annie Sloan Chalk Paint online via shops like ThePurplePaintedLady and Mama’s Happy.

Boutique stores like vintage markets, refurbished furniture stores, and the like may also carry brands such as Annie Sloan, Country Chic Paint, and Retique It.

It’s worth finding out what’s available in your area. Whenever I stumble upon a favorite paint locally, I try to buy what I need to avoid shipping costs in the future.

On a budget? Rust-Oleum Chalked paint and KILZ chalk style paint are both excellent options that cost about half the price of premium boutique style paints.

Target Online: Magnolia Home Chalk Paint

Of course we need to talk about where to find the chalk paint that Joanna Gaines uses! Joanna’s selection of chalk style paint colors is trendy and perfect for that farmhouse-style feel. You can snag the colors of the Magnolia Home Chalk Style Paint online at Target.com.

This is also a great option because Target offers free shipping over $35.00. That means if you purchase a quart of chalk paint and can of wax, it will ship free. Yay!

The Magnolia line at Target also includes paintbrushes so you can purchase everything you need in one order.

Note: Rust-Oleum Chalked Spray Paints (like Chiffon Cream which I used on these handmade Christmas ornaments) are also available online at Target.com.

Don’t like paying for shipping? Target and Amazon both offer low minimums for free shipping ($35 minimum at Target and $25 at Amazon).

The Home Depot: Rust-Oleum Chalked and Behr Chalk Style Paint

Home Depot is generally my go-to for chalk style paint. Though I’ve used plenty of paints, I come back to Rust-Oleum’s Chalked line again and again. They have a basic selection of colors (I like Linen White, Chiffon Cream, and Blush Pink the best!) and I also use the top coat they offer (Rust-Oleum Matte Clear) quite a bit.

I like the convenience of being able to grab a can locally, but the Home Depot also offers shipping and in-store pickup. Note that Rust-Oleum also sells tint-able bases for their Chalked paint that you can find at Ace hardware (more on that later!) as well as a Chalked spray paint line.

Now, let’s talk about the Behr Chalk Decorative Paint. Like I said, I would usually just head straight for the Rust-Oluem paints…until I learned that Behr’s line can be tinted or color matched to any color you desire. I’m here for it.

I still have yet to confirm this myself in person, but oh the possibilities! I’ll report back when I grab a can. You can also just snag it online and select a color (LOTS of options) right on the product page.

The Behr Chalk Decorative Paint line also includes wax in clear, white, and dark varieties as well as aerosol spray paints.

Note: Home Depot also carries Americana Décor Chalky Finish Paints which I have not used yet.

Looking for a very particular color (or color match)? Try Behr Chalk Decorative Paint at the Home Depot where you can order from a huge selection of colors online OR get a custom tint in-store.

Amazon: Rust-Oleum, KILZ, and More

Not surprisingly, Amazon has a good-sized list of matte finish chalk style paints to offer.

We already talked about Rust-Oleum Chalked, which I have used on projects like my pink chalk painted chair and this dresser flip.

I also really like KILZ Chalk Style Paint, which I used on my IKEA Play Kitchen Hack and wrote a full review on here.

Amazon also sells Country Chic Chalk Paint, Shabby Chic Chalk Based Furniture Paint, Jolie Paint, and more. These paints tend to be a bit higher-priced than my go-tos, but if you are looking for a specific color or just want to try something new, they are worth checking out!

I have stuck to the more affordable brands offered on Amazon, but if you have experience with one of the other chalk style paints they sell, feel free to chime in via the comments below.

Walmart: Rust-Oleum Chalked and KILZ Chalk Paint

I noticed on the Walmart website that the Rust-Oleum Chalked paints seemed to be priced a bit lower (up to a $5 difference) from other retailers I usually buy from. Worth checking out for sure! Each color is a slightly different price, so that will make a difference too.

Walmart also carries the KILZ Chalk Style Paint line (including the spray paints) and Renaissance Chalk Finish paint (more pricey, but lots of colors).

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware is yet another stop for Rust-Oleum chalk paint. Though (at least in my area), the selection is less than several years ago, they still carry most of the Chalked line in-store.

Another bonus is that Ace also stocks Rust-Oleum’s light tint base and dark tint base. On each of the product pages I linked you can see the additional colors that the paint can be tinted. These aren’t overly extensive lists (about 25 additional colors), but they do provide more options.

I thought they might be able to tint the paint any color, but I was told in-store that it’s limited to the colors that Rust-Oleum offers. Feel free to of course check at your local store though.

Ace Hardware also carries Amy Howard at Home (I have not yet tried this paint).

Other Stores & Paints

Craft Stores

Craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Joann also carry chalk paint lines.

Michael’s carries the FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Style Paint and Wax. I have used the paint for some small projects (things like Christmas ornaments), but since I’ve read mixed reviews on the wax I generally stick with top coats I know I already like. Joann also carries the FolkArt Paint.

If you’re painting furniture or larger pieces that need to be durable, I’d suggest sticking with one of the home décor lines sold in quarts (like Rust-Oleum, Behr, Annie Sloan, KILZ, and Magnolia).

Lowe’s

Lowe’s Home Improvement stocks chalk style paint brands including Amy Howard at Home, Rust-Oleum, Recolor, and Krylon.

Fleet Farm

Yet another stop for the ever-popular Rust-Oleum Chalked line. I’ve noticed that the price point for the Chalked line at Fleet Farm seems to generally be a bit lower than at other merchants. If you are lucky enough to snag it on sale, even better! I’ve previously purchased Rust-Oleum chalk paints for $10 a quart on sale at Fleet Farm.
